Hello again! First I want to share some things that I didn't on the last post that I think will be interesting for anyone wanting to build.

Our land slopes from south to north quite a bit, and John has always wanted a daylight basement. (What we are doing doesn't have a lot of daylight though, due to his greater desire for a storm shelter and safety! 😊 John is a safety nut!) So we had to grade the pad and wound up making two levels to place the containers on.

After the pad was leveled we had the holes dug for the footers. They wound up being about 2.5 feet wide by 4 feet long (the width of a backhoe bucket!) We were hoping to dig down 5-6 feet, but when they got to about 3 feet they hit solid rock, which is what we were aiming for anyways.

You can see in the backgrounds of these pictures how dense the trees were. While we were waiting on things to get moving John rented a skid steer to clear out some of the trees and brush so that we could get the crane in and set the containers without any trouble. The skid steer was amazing for pushing over and uprooting trees, instead of an overgrown jungle, most of our yard looks like a park!

In the midst of this waiting time, we also got some advice on building a cinder block wall around the containers and then we would set the framing, insulation and siding on that. We plan to insulate the ouside and leave as many of the metal container walls as possible on the inside!

So they dug a footer for the block wall all the way around the perimeter. This was so neat because I could finally visualize the size of the house.

As you can see in the above picture, we have two footers for the "basement" container stack in the back and two footers for the front stack. (The one on the right is the one we framed around because of the infamous blowout 😣)

The base for the wall is poured also!! Yay!! So excited to see progress! We bought and had delivered 1000 cinder blocks and a truckload of sand!

Thanks for joining our adventure!

Upstairs! Last post!

Hey y'all, Wanted to share the pictures of our gorgeous upstairs. The main room is 40' long and 13 1/2 feet wide, and with the containers on each side. We left the whole room open with 10' windows on each end. Looking out these windows into the trees makes me feel like I'm living in a treehouse.  Going backwards: here is the deck we built, 17' above ground. So relaxing.  Landing at the top of the stairs. Love the trees. Bedroom with the deck. Sons bedroom. Daughters bedroom.  Large multipurpose "game room"  We painted around the "CMA CGM" logo and kept it for posterity.  That's it! House is sold. This build was a fun adventure! Please feel free to reach out with any questions! Hope this blog helps someone else along their container home journey! ✌️

Home Tour pt 2

Hey everyone! So, I decided to post one or two update pictures of our foyer. Fall is here and that means we move the wood rack into the house. My son welded up a new one, since the one we got at the (unnamed) farm store only lasted 2 seasons.  I also added a lamp, and it warms up the entryway so nicely.  We found our wood stove in northern Arkansas. From what we can figure out, it was cast in the 1930s. It is not airtight, so the temperature fluctuates quite a bit.  When you walk through the foyer into the great room, the wood stove is on your right.  The dining room is beyond it and the living room area is to your left. I have my grandma's china hutch, along with the dishes we used many years around the Sunday lunch table. I have added my own china as well. Behind the dining table is our bar. I love how it opens up the kitchen area, and makes a nice place for company to sit while I'm finishing up dinner! We have had our dining table since we had a house fire j...

Home tour pt 3

Hey everyone,  The home is currently on the market, but I wanted to post a couple more times to finish up the tour! My favorite area is our bedroom suite. I'm so thankful for the space we have as well as the nice sized bath and closet.  Here is what our bedroom looked like before it was a bedroom. We lived with the red and orange walls for several months.  We made slow but sure progress painting and trimming out while living in the house 🤯 Yes I did only paint a portion of the wall JUST so we could hang John's guitar. (It was like that for about 4 months.) (Side not on dates and amounts of time I reference, they are ALL approximate. I really have no idea how long that portion of the wall was painted before I finished it.) (Don't judge). Again, I fell in love with the cream and grey color scheme, I feel like it softens the metal, industrial feel of the house. We installed a sliding barn door going into the master closet, but used a regular interior door for the bath...
